Who Is.. Dr Mark Bailey

Dr Mark Bailey, Northumbria Lead

Dr Mark Bailey is Associate Professor of Design-led Innovation and Northumbria Lead for Creative Fuse North East. He leads design-led responsible innovation research and practice activities with external businesses as well as research programmes in the North East of England and in Armenia exploring the role of design-led innovation in small to medium sized enterprises working. As Northumbria’s Principle Investigator in the Creative Fuse North East programme, Mark leads Northumbria’s enterprise support activities and the team’s innovation support research.

Mark espouses the multiple values of involving students in academic research and knowledge exchange activities and in Creative Fuse North East he employs an Integrated Academic Practice approach to enable post graduate students to act as co-investigators in developing and deploying innovation-readiness workshops with regional enterprises.

Bailey considers design to be the art of creative compromise, a temporal, synthetic act of knowledge-creation which creatively balances the multiple disciplinary and stakeholder perspectives vested in any given situation. His personal research is exploring the liminality associated with such knowledge-creation and the educational frameworks that may be conceived to support it.

Through Creative Fuse North East, he is actively exploring the role of co-created knowledge by design as a mechanism for knowledge exchange and impact creation.
