Justine’s research is especially focused in the role of design as a catalyst for growth, learning, and positive change. Her current research spans across:

  • Revealing patterns that make current systems unjust and unfair through design-led approaches,
  • Handling disputes, navigating tensions and facilitating conversations through design,
  • The role of design in enhancing creative confidence, entrepreneurial agency and resilience in creatives.

Justine’s doctoral study explored Rapid Design Interventions outcomes as well as the nuances of design-driven and design-led approaches. The former is about building an innovation strategy for an organisation that leads to products and services that have a radical new meaning for customers. The latter is about working closely with organisations and stakeholders to understand their potential futures and create a strategy to achieve their vision.

Her doctoral research emerged whilst working closely with SME owners and sole traders as part of her Innovator-in-Residence role at Northumbria, where she co-designed and delivered rapid and intense design-led interventions to support organisations with innovation. These interventions were part of Get Ready To Innovate (GRTI), a programme delivered in the UK through Creative Fuse North East (2017-2019; 2020-on-going), in Armenia through the British Council Creative Spark project in partnership with the American University of Armenia (2018-2019), and in the US (2020-2021) in partnership with Cornell University and funded by the IIE Centennial Fellowship.
