Our Alumni - Work For Us
Charlotte is an Associate Professor of Law at Northumbria Law School and the Faculty Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. She joined Northumbria University in 1997 after practising as a solicitor in London, Greece and Australia. She obtained her teaching qualification (PGCE(HE) in law) at the University of Wales, Cardiff before joining the Law School.
Charlotte's research interests are in mental capacity law and practice. She was the founding editor of the Journal of Mental Health Law and developed the first postgraduate Masters programmes in mental health law in the Law School. She has trained a wide range of legal, health and social care professionals in mental health and mental capacity law for over 20 years.
Charlotte has taught across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Law School and was Director of Education between 2017 and 2021. She is an external examiner, an assessor on the Law Society's Mental Capacity (Welfare) Accreditation scheme and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Room 305, City Campus East 1Charlotte has researched and published in mental health and mental capacity law for over 20 years. Much of her socio-legal research is interdisciplinary and focuses on mental capacity and decision making under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) in dementia care. Her research was presented to the Northern Ireland Assembly Ad Hoc Joint Committee considering the Mental Capacity Bill and informed the NICE Guideline [NG108] Mental Capacity and Decision Making.
