Dr Jen Menzies

Dr Jen Menzies is an Assistant Professor and Programme Lead for Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) in the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne. She teaches a wide variety of public health and health promotion both in the UK and with the Kaplan programme in Singapore A registered nurse, midwife and health visitor with over thirty years' clinical experience in the 0-19 services and public health, including work exploring parental views, she has worked extensively in safeguarding and domestic abuse with perpetrators and victims of both genders. For the past seven years, she has extended this work in academia at Northumbria University. She completed her PhD at Northumbria University in May 2026, examining first-time fathers' experiences of infant feeding decisions through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Her research interests centre on gender, fatherhood, infant feeding, health inequalities and the inclusion of fathers in perinatal services. She serves as an education representative on the Institute of Health Visiting National Forum, is a member of the Community Practitioners and Health Visiting Association (CPHVA) and is a peer reviewer for the Journal of Family and Child Health. She has presented her research at national and international conferences, including the Society for Simulation in Europe (SESAM), the Institute of Health Visiting Evidence-Based Conference and the Maternal and Infant Nutrition and Nurturing (MAIMM) International Conference. In 2024, she received the CPHVA Innovation Award, and in 2025, the Apprenticeship Award for widening access to SCPHN recruitment strategy. In 2026, she received the Institute of Health Visiting national Lecturer Award for her interprofessional, complex decision-making simulated practice for post-registration students, supporting them in achieving complex standards through a combination of deliberate practice and mastery in complex decision-making.
