Prof Sheng-feng Qin

Professor Qin joined  Northumbia School of Design in 2014. He was 2019 Newton Prize recipient based on his collaborative research work with Professor Cuixia Ma at the Institute of Software of Chinese Academy of Sciences on Transforming Service Design and Big Data Technologies into Sustainable Urbanisation.

Prior to this appointment  he worked in Department of Design at Brunel University as a Senior Lecturer in Product/Industrial Design (September 2007- December 2013) and a Lecturer (September 2001-August 2007). At Brunel University, he led the Computer Aided Design and Engineering research group between 2007 and 2013.  Dr Qin was a post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Loughborough (March 2000 and August 2001), and a Research Assistant in the School of Product Design of Cardiff Metropolitan University now-UWIC then) (September 1998 and Feburary 1999). He was an Academic Visitor in the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Birmingham ( September 1996 and September 1997), and a Lecturer/Associate Professor at East China Jiaotong University of China (May 1988-August 1996). He worked as a Design Engineer in HuaiBei Coal Mining Construction Company in China between 1983 and 1985.

Prof. Qin has published more than 200 papers in journals and conferences and 2 books.

Further Information

Professor Qin is an associate member of The Design Lab at UC San Diego since his visit to the Design Lab in 2016-2017 under the Leverhulme International Fellowship. 

Profsessor Qin is also a Visiting Professor to Southwest Jiaotong University of China on Digital Design and Manufacturing (2014-) and a Co-Coordinator of the Joint Design Innovation Lab with Northwestern Polytechnical University of China (2017-).

Professor Qin is an Associate Editor of International Journal of Design Engineering (Inderscience Publishers) and Journal of Systems Science & Control Engineering (Taylor & Francis Online).
