Café Central Transformation

Café Central in City Campus Northumberland Building had a head-to-toe makeover in the summer 2014/15 thanks to a capital investment of £150,000. The refurbishment included new lighting, flooring, decoration and furniture throughout.

The outcome is a more comfortable ‘home from home’ atmosphere for students, staff or anyone else just looking for a place to relax, socialise and have a quick bite to eat.

More spacious and casual feel

While the size of the café hasn’t changed, the clever reconfiguration of the internal space allows for more footfall and includes additional seating areas. Canopies have been added down the length of the café frontage allowing for the creation of 16 new outside dining spaces. Glazed partitions have been put in place which open up in the warmer months of the year to create an open air, almost ‘street food’ type atmosphere.

Based on customer feedback, USB charging sockets were provided in front of house areas, allowing students and staff to charge devices at the café.

The refurbishment was carried out during the summer months to minimise disruption to students, which also enabled everyone on campus to start the new academic year enjoying the fresh space.

The café has enjoyed an increased popularity among students and staff since the refurbishment, which is a testament to the transformation.
