The Integrated Research Application System (IRAS) is a single system for applying for Health Research Authority (HRA) permissions and approvals for health and social care or community care research in the UK. IRAS enables you to enter information about your project once instead of duplicating information in separate application forms and uses filters to ensure that the data collected and collated is appropriate to the type of study, and consequently the permissions and approvals required.

New IRAS users can find further guidance on the IRAS site. To determine if your study needs NHS REC review, please use the Decision Tool, here. Please note, this tool is for REC decisions only - you may still require HRA approval.

If you are unsure whether you should complete and IRAS form, please check with your supervisor in the first instance, and then your Associate Head of School (RKE) or the Research Environment and Integrity Manager. This presentation on HRA and NHS REC applications is very informative.

Once you have completed your application, please send the following documentation to ethicssupport@northumbria.ac.uk, and they will contact the University sponsor to sign your application:

After you have approval from IRAS, please follow the Northumbria University Ethics Online System process for IRAS submissions - please see the guidance on our Training and Guidance page about how to submit an application.

Required certificates for the IRAS form can be found in the at the Insurance Hub under Featured Documents (staff access only).
