Understanding the Challenge
For many people with Learning Disabilities, using public transport can be challenging, particularly in semi-rural regions such as North East England where transport options are limited and services are less frequent. Despite the importance of inclusive mobility, there is relatively little lived-experience evidence documenting the specific barriers faced by people with Learning Disabilities when navigating public transport systems.
This project seeks to address this gap by exploring the experiences, needs, and priorities of young people with Learning Disabilities. It will generate early insights into how public transport journeys are currently experienced. The project will provide an evidence base to inform future research, training, and practical interventions aimed at improving inclusive transport systems.
Our Approach
The project will involve 12–15 participants, including people with Learning Disabilities and staff who support them, and will be delivered through two rounds of workshops.
Workshop 1 will focus on understanding barriers to using public transport in North East England. Through group-based, accessible activities, participants will share experiences of what makes journeys difficult, confusing, or stressful, including issues related to information, accessibility, communication, and social support.
Workshop 2 will build on these themes and explore supportive approaches that could make journeys feel easier, calmer, and safer. Participants will discuss preferred forms of help and simple ideas for improving travel experiences.
The final phase will include the production of a research manuscript, an accessible easy-read summary, and a roadmap for the next stage of funding and collaboration.
