What will I learn on this module?

You will learn the importance and components of Business Information System. This will include common types of Information System.
Using an Enterprise System as a framework you will explore some common business processes and consider the data required and generated by these and how it can be used to support wider business strategy and reporting.
It will also provide students with practical experience in the use of such systems which will provide invaluable in helping with a placement and employability. Wherever possible workshops will use small case studies and training exercises adapted from standard ERP training to illustrate and explore theoretical discussions as well as giving practical experience using such a system. Additional exercises will be set as independent work.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, workshops, and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of formative workshop exercises that will be undertaken both individually and in small groups of guided exercises.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will learn through lectures, seminars and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories and concepts that will enable you to tackle a series of guided exercises in seminars which you will receive formative feedback on.

The University’s eLearning Portal offers remote access to all lecture and seminar materials to reinforce your learning. You are expected to expand on these using recommended reading and your own research.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

Knowledge & Understanding:
ML01 – You will be able to explain how Business Information Systems support organisational goals and business strategy.
ML02 - You will be able to discuss the strategic and cross-functional importance of business processes and business data in a number of functional areas

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities
ML03 – You will be able to discuss the data and information requirements, usage and outputs of these business processes and the wider business implications.

ML04 – You will be able recommend appropriate courses of action to manage and resolve issues and to justify and explain the reasons for these recommendations including the use of professional and academic literature

How will I be assessed?

There will be two components of summative assessment for this module.
The first (50%) will require the completion of a number of business process exercises and a short report (c1500 words) discussing data issues relevant to them. This assessment will address ML01, ML03. .

The second (50%) will be a report (c2500 words) discussing Information System benefits and issues relating to an individual business case. This assessment will address ML01, ML02, MLO3, ML04.

You will receive both informative and confirmatory feedback on your assessments.

Module abstract

Business Information Systems are an integral and essential part of any large organisation. This module will build on the Business and Computing knowledge developed during the first year to further understand the useage and importance of these systems. As well as wider, more general systems, there will be specific focus on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, one of the the most common type of Integrated Enterprise System. “Integrated” refers to many departments and functions of the enterprise sharing the same application and data. Common business processes will be explored using the ERP systems as a focus.

You will develop an appreciation of the way modern enterprises use integrated systems to achieve business benefits; an understanding of the constraints and impact of such systems on business organisations and the issues and best practices for implementing them.

The module will include hands on use of an ERP system as the framework to cover common business processes and the data used and generated by them.
