What will I learn on this module?

You will learn through understanding the key requirements and practices related to the management of people within the context of the construction industry.

How will I learn on this module?

Lectures will be used to introduce the practices and principles concerning the management of people within the construction industry. Seminars will typically involve the use of electronic materials (such as web links and videos), presentations, and in-class discussions and games. Through these media, you will be encouraged to practice research-based problem-solving to analysis current problems within the construction industry and propose potential solutions. These issues will include construction culture or how greater collaborative working practice within the construction industry could improve profit margins and client satisfaction.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The University’s virtual learning environment (eLP) will be used to support you and facilitate academic tutor directed learning. This will be in the form of the teaching material and supporting documents, such as research papers, current media coverage, web links and videos. You will be provided with formative feedback during formally scheduled teaching sessions.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

3. Critically examine and evaluate the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the delivery of construction projects.

4. Demonstrate an appreciation of the cultural and ethical issues in relation to the management of people in the delivery of quality construction projects.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment
Formative assessment will be used to allow you to build confidence and highlight any misunderstandings you may have of the theoretical and professional concepts presented in the module. Additional formative feedback shall be delivered to you verbally by academic tutors during formally scheduled teaching and individual or group activity-based sessions to help you learn and prepare you for the submission of your summative assessment.

Summative Assessment
Summative assessment will be by one piece of individual assessment, namely a report that will assess your ability to satisfy all the module learning outcomes 1 -5, including reflection on your leadership and team working skills in relation to the assessment scenario.

You will be assessed using a problem-based approach via a real-world problem, allowing you to critically apply your knowledge from the module to a real-world scenario.

You will use the University’s VLE to submit your coursework digitally and receive your feedback.

Module abstract

Managing a successful construction project requires the management of time, cost, quality and safety. To be able to do this effectively, a construction professional must be able to manage their most important resource – people. This module will provide knowledge and understanding to allow you to do this. The assessment for the module includes an opportunity to engage with authentic problems that exist in construction project teams. The module is situated at level 6 to allow you to reflect upon your knowledge and understanding following the sandwich placement year and ultimately prepare for graduate employment.
