MW6000 - Leadership & Management

You will learn through interactive lectures, seminars, and guided and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories that will enable you to complete guided work, which will then be discussed in seminars and group work through discussion and debate. Reflection on practice experiences will allow you to apply current evidence and ensure you are appropriately prepared for practice as a midwife. Discussion and debate will be a feature of the module to understand the influence of the political landscape on service provision, improvement and personal development. Learning is supported by tutorial supervision and peer feedback, and a group assessment tutorial.

Adhering to Universal Design for Learning principles, two options for authentic assessment are offered in this module, allowing students to optimise choice and autonomy to support engagement and demonstrate learning and capability.

Support will include feedback from tutors during interactive lectures and seminars, which will allow for knowledge checking and questions to be answered promptly. The seminars will also provide an opportunity for you to receive feedback on how your academic abilities are developing. Resources will be available to you on the electronic learning platform (BlackBoard) and tutors can be contacted for support. Both the lectures, seminars and a group tutorial will provide academic support focussed on the assessment task.

The University Libraries at both Coach Lane Campus and City Campus offer an extensive collection of material, both hard copy and electronic, access to international databases and training in information retrieval. Formative assessment
Formative assessment and feedback will be provided by academic staff and peers throughout the module in relation to the group activities you will engage in to develop understanding of the module outcomes and content.
Group debates will rehearse critical discussion of the issues of management and leadership within midwifery service provision to engagement with relevant themes and current issues to support d assessment preparation.

Summative assessment

Option 1: 3000-word essay on an aspect of management or leadership within midwifery care
Option 2: Face to face Powerpoint Presentation on an aspect of management or leadership within midwifery care, 30 minutes (20-minutes + 10 min Q&A)

Leadership and management are key components of moving toward registration as a midwife. The emphasis of your learning will be based on understanding the foundations and principles of the national and global context of maternity service provision and exploring the evidence-base and drivers of safe and effective maternity care. Understanding your contribution to leadership from a personal, professional, and organisational perspective will be explored, with a focus on working with others and building effective working practices and relationships within and across professional boundaries. How organisations and individuals are required to engage with and manage change to improve the quality of services will also be explored, with a focus on collaborative models of stakeholder and service user engagement. You will be encouraged to consider and explore key concepts including organisational culture, change management, transformational leadership skills and your ability to work effectively as part of an interprofessional team. The teaching will comprise of theoretical lectures and guided preparation for debate and discussion of these key issues in the seminars. Tutorial and peer feedback during seminars will support development of your assessment work.
