A seminar based simulated ‘unfolding’ case study role play with peer group discussion provides an anchoring thread throughout the module; a realistic scenario based upon practice learning unfolds to add new information, requiring students to make a series of decisions in response to a dynamic situation, mirroring real world practice learning in midwifery practice. This is complimented by lectures which consider the concepts and literature that underpin and influence the facilitation of learning in practice. Tutor-supported exploration of assessment of professional values, proficiencies and professional competencies is rehearsed through role play, case discussion, guided critical reflection and progression planning with appreciation of both pre-qualifying and post-qualifying contextual factors.

Adhering to Universal Design for Learning principles, 2 options for authentic assessment are offered in this module, allowing students to optimise choice and autonomy to support engagement and demonstrate learning and capability.

Tutor led Discussion Boards enable ongoing discussion of the concepts, literature and ideas covered in the lectures. Peer-to-peer support and challenge during student-led seminars is a key feature of the module.

Formative assessment: peer discussion groups to analyse real time case study over the course of the module. PS feedback in practice will help the students to critically reflect on clinical progress and discuss within seminars facilitating engagement with the student perspective.

Summative Assessment:

Option 1: Annotated Poster (1000 words). 1500-word annotation of the posterof an aspect of learning and teaching related to a midwifery setting. Submit via Turnitin.

Option 2: Presentation of an aspect of learning and teaching related to a midwifery setting – 30 minutes face to face Powerpoint presentation with reference list.

This module offers an opportunity to critically explore and reflect on the values and skills needed for facilitating learning, teaching and assessment of professional values, behaviours and proficiencies. A Simulated ‘unfolding’ case study role play with peer group discussion provides an anchoring thread throughout the module; a realistic scenario based around practice learning unfolds to add new information, requiring students to make a series of decisions in response to a dynamic situation, mirroring real world practice learning in midwifery practice. This is a safe space to practice dealing with complex or challenging situations for the first time, which builds confidence for real-world practice supervision, so that you can act as a Practice Supervisor following registration as a midwife.
You will explore the concept of continuing professional development and consider the skills required by, and the potential routes after qualifying as a registered midwife, to becoming a Practice Assessor, an educator within practice, an academic, an independent practitioner, or a Professional Midwifery Advocate. You will revisit the values required for professional life, debating the contemporary context of professional registration as a midwife.
