DA5122 - Practice Placement B

This module has integrated components to teaching and learning:
• Small number of blended workshops to support preparation for practice placement
• 10 weeks of experiential learning in a professional area working alongside qualified occupational therapists
• Specific small group training and online training in mandatory skills, e.g. Moving & Handling, Basic Life Support, Safeguarding.

There will be an online mid-placement workshop which is an opportunity for peer support during placement, to integrate theory with your practice experiences and to reflect on working together in teams.
Your practice placement will take place in a different setting to your day to day work setting enabling you to experience the breadth and diverse nature of occupational therapy practice, you will engage in 370 hours of practice based learning during this placement contributing to the minimum 1000 hours of practice required by the PRSBs for registration as an occupational therapist.

You will have the opportunity to gather examples of activities and evidence of your learning, self-appraisal and reflection to contribute to your reflections on Aptem demonstrating your development in meeting the KSBs required for your apprenticeship. This aims to enhance your learning by taking you beyond the limits of the individual module, and helping foster lifelong learning, as portfolios ongoing reflection support inquiry and integration of learning.

You will be supported throughout your placement by your module tutor and other academic staff, with key check-ins before, during, and after your placement.

In practice, a qualified occupational therapist will be your practice educator. They’ll guide your learning and help you make the most of your placement experience. You’ll also be encouraged to connect with other professionals and team members in your placement setting to broaden your learning and support network. You will also be supported by your personal tutor who will undertake a tripartite formative meeting with yourself and your educator at the mid point of the module and your work place coach will also support your learning and development through the PRM process.

Attendance at the mid-placement workshop provides opportunity for peer learning and support.

Formative assessment:
Ongoing formative assessment of practice where strengths and areas for development are identified. This will be supported through regular supervision meetings between the student and the practice educator and will be summarised during a mid-point contact with an academic tutor.

Both weekly supervision and the mid-point contact will be summarised in writing and any additional action plans documented and added to the assessment documents as part of ongoing supervision records. This constitutes ongoing formative feedback and feedforward discussed with your weekly during supervision and at the midpoint placement contact

Summative assessment
Level 5 Practice Placement Learning Outcomes (ALL MLOs)

You will be assessed by your Practice Educator on a pass/fail basis in line with level 5 learning outcomes, based on supervised practice linked to the competencies listed in the OT-PAD document.

You will receive written and verbal feedback on your strengths and areas for development from your Practice Educator at the end of your practice placement

In the event of a fail outcome, the OT-PAD will be completed in full, with final assessment summary detailing action plan for resit placement. Your personal tutor will support you to develop your action plan based on the feedback.

The summative assessment will promote achievement of all MLO’s.

This module gives you the opportunity to build on your first placement by taking a more active role in delivering occupation-focused practice in a real-world setting.

Over a 10 week period, you will work as part of a team in a specific practice area, learning from and with service users, occupational therapists, and other professionals. You’ll be supported by a qualified occupational therapist (your practice educator), who will guide your learning and provide regular supervision and feedback.

You will continue developing your core skills, linking theory from university modules to practice. University-based sessions before, during, and after placement will help you prepare, reflect, and plan for your ongoing development.
