OT6008 - Occupational Therapy Major Project

All learning on the BSc Occupational Therapy programme is designed to be transformative and experiential, and this module is delivered through a series of workshop sessions which include taught material, discussion, activity and project work, using a workbook to guide your focus through the stages of the proposal/plan.

Small group learning sets will be used for group supervision and peer support, and your supervisor will guide you through both group and individual sessions.

The e-learning portal will signpost you to high quality sources of information. The site provides a wide variety of core and supplementary information to encourage you to engage fully in the module content and build effective academic habits to support your learning throughout the programme.

You will have the opportunity to gather examples of activities and evidence of your learning, self-appraisal and reflection to contribute to your student ePortfolio. This aims to enhance your learning by taking you beyond the limits of the individual module, and helping foster lifelong learning, as portfolios support inquiry, reflection and integration of learning. Items to include in your portfolio could include your initial project plan or elements from your supervision records.

The identified module tutor, module teaching team and supervisor will structure learning opportunities to support your learning and skill development within the module and to assist you to work towards the module assessment.

The e-learning portal will provide a repository for all module information, including a module guide, electronic reading list, detailed assessment guidance, and week by week guidance on how to engage with the module content.

A formative assessment (with feedback), group assessment tutorials and feedback within sessions will all help you to work towards your summative submission. The assessment requires both the production of a written submission and a log of engagement with supervision and key learning tasks.

Formative assessment:
At a mid-point of the module you will complete a template identifying details of your plan to be agreed by your supervisor. You will receive formative feedback to guide your ongoing development.

Summative assessment:
6000-word research proposal or business plan (100%)

You will be provided with guidance during the module regarding the structure of the major project. A record of attendance at supervision and completion of key learning tasks throughout the process, signed by the supervisor, will be included in your summative assessment.

Your summative assessment mark and feedback will be returned to you within the University standard of 20 working days, normally accessed through the module eLP site.

‘Occupational Therapy Major Project’ is the keystone project of the programme, connecting practice, academic and research orientated learning. The module requires you to produce a research proposal or business plan to address an occupational need or issue. You will also consider the role of individuals and communities in research or business development and demonstrate ethical and responsible use of technology in the development of ideas.

You will select a topic and approach and engage with your tutors, supervisor and learning set to produce a proposal or plan, showcasing a robust understanding of the process and implications of research or business interventions. You are required to produce a 6000-word assessment, plus a log of attendance and activities verified by your supervisor.

The learning in this module builds on research learning in years one and two, and entrepreneurial content in year two. Taught sessions are supported by practical activities and learning sets.

This is a year-long module to support you to make links to your practice-based learning/placement module (which spans Semester 1 and 2) – and to integrate learning across other Level 6 modules.
