What will I learn on this module?

In this module, you will learn about the applications of satellite data to observe and monitor our planet, developing your skills in dealing with Earth Observation datasets. You will learn about the different applications of satellite data to monitor the different components of the Earth system, including the ocean, cryosphere, and atmosphere. You will gain hands-on experience in extracting key information from satellite data for a variety of applications through computer-based practical exercises. You will develop your confidence, skills, and abilities in satellite data processing, data visualisation, problem solving, and science communication.

How will I learn on this module?

You will learn through lectures, seminars, and computer-based practical exercises. Beyond timetabled sessions, your independent study will be guided and supported through your engagement with a range of interactive learning resources accessible online via the module eLP site.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

You will be taught by world-leading experts in the field of Earth Observation. Your class materials will be further supported by online resources available via the module eLP site. These resources include an interactive reading list with online access to a number of key articles aligned with your weekly lecture programme. Staff teaching on the module have an open-door policy during normal working hours and are responsive to communication via e-mail to support your learning.

Knowledge & Understanding:

MLO1: Understand the main methods by which satellite data can be processed to extract key information on a range of topics

MLO2: Critically identify and review specific applications where satellite data may be used as a tool for monitoring and research

MLO3: Gain hands-on experience of remote sensing through computer-based practical exercises

MLO4: Develop critical, analytical, and presentation skills

MLO5: Demonstrate a curiosity in using Earth Observation to deal with contemporary issues faced by society in a warming world

How will I be assessed?

Summative assessment: you will be assessed in a summative manner through two pieces of assessment:



Portfolio document of 1500 words (30%)

This assessment task will require you to write a portfolio document equivalent to 1,500 words, which will include 3 small tasks set up during the computer-based practical exercises.

Addresses MLOs 1, 3 and 4.



Project presentation (70%)

This assessment task will require you to select an Earth Observation satellite mission and showcase your own example of a specific application of its data. You will identify and review the relevant scientific literature, analyse and prepare a visualisation of your own Earth Observation dataset, and present your selected mission and application in an oral presentation.

Formative assessment: You will receive formative feedback on your initial idea for the topic of your project. This will provide guidance on the expected style and standard of work. Before the presentation of your project, you will have the opportunity to submit a draft overview of the structure and main points of your presentation for formative feedback. Detailed comments will be provided.

Module abstract

Data acquired by Earth Observation satellite missions are essential to assess how our planet is changing, prepare for the impacts of global warming, but also to advance our understanding of key physical processes that are driving these changes. In this module, you will learn about a wide range of satellite data applications, from assessing changes in the cryosphere to monitoring our oceans and atmosphere. You will develop your understanding of how satellite data can be processed to extract key information on our changing environment and support decision-making processes.
