OT4005 - Occupation in Context 1

All learning on the BSc Occupational Therapy programme is designed to be transformative and experiential. Through practical, experiential and sometimes immersive approaches, you will establish your understanding of the scientific foundations which inform participation in occupations alongside opportunities for repetition, reflection and feedback.

Taught content will be delivered in lectures and seminars and will be complimented by structured directed learning which will scaffold and build on your developing knowledge human systems and relation to human occupation. Recorded material and directed study will support your engagement with foundation level scientific knowledge required to develop profession specific skills in occupational analysis. Carefully selected and targeted reading, workbooks, quizzes and reflection materials will enable you to consolidate your learning. Practical workshops will provide the opportunity to apply your knowledge and understanding of function in relation to person, context/environment and occupation.
Technology enabled approaches (such as the use of digital visualisation tools to support learning about human anatomy) will be used to develop your knowledge and understanding of the systems of the human body.

You will have the opportunity to gather examples of activities and evidence of your learning, self-appraisal and reflection to contribute to your student ePortfolio. This aims to enhance your learning by taking you beyond the limits of the individual module, and helping foster lifelong learning, as portfolios support inquiry, reflection and integration of learning. Items for your ePortfolio could include examples of activity analysis.

The identified module tutor, alongside the module teaching team, will structure learning opportunities to support your learning and skill development within the module and to assist you to work towards the module assessment.

The e-learning portal will provide a repository for all module information, including a module guide, electronic reading list, detailed assessment guidance, and week by week guidance on how to engage with the module content.

You will receive ongoing tutor guidance to support your journey including a formative assessment (with feedback) to facilitate progress towards your summative assessment.

Formative Assessment
Opportunities to practice analysing activities and presenting in group situations will be incorporated into module sessions, with peer and tutor feedback.

Summative Assessment
Delivery of a teaching session based on the analysis of a functional activity.

Based on a given scenario of a functional task each group member to lead part of a teaching session to analyse the activity. Individual elements of the analysis could include:
o Gross motor control
o Fine motor control
o Sensory awareness
o Cognitive function
o Ergonomics/environmental elements
o Etc.

This assessment will normally be delivered as a group but each student will be assessed individually on their contribution to the teaching session.

Your summative assessment mark and feedback will be returned to you within the University standard of 20 working days, normally accessed through the module eLP site.

‘Occupation in Context 1’ will help you to learn scientific knowledge to understand and analyse the activities and occupations that people do in their daily lives. This includes anatomical, physiological, ergonomic, sociological and psychological principles in relation to occupation in context. The module will help you to define and describe core occupational concepts, building your confidence and competence and socialising you into the profession of occupational therapy.

The content, delivery style and assessment will help you to demonstrate your foundation skills in occupational and activity analysis.

The module is delivered through a series of workshop sessions which include taught material, discussion, and practical activities, using occupation as a means of learning together.

The module will be assessed through a teaching session, where you will apply your skills in activity analysis and gain confidence in communicating this to others.
