Your decision letter will explain why your Student visa was refused. It will also tell you whether you have the option to ask the Home Office to look at the decision again.

You must read your decision letter carefully and ensure that you understand what the letter means. If you are unsure, please contact us. A University immigration caseworker can help you understand it.

Important: If your Student visa was refused after a credibility interview

This means that the Entry Clearance Officer was not satisfied that you are a genuine student. This is a particularly serious type of refusal, and the only way to remove it from your immigration record is through a successful Administrative Review. Contact us immediately. A University immigration caseworker will be in touch as soon as possible to discuss if and how they can support you.

You may be able to ask the Home Office to reconsider their decision through a process called an Administrative Review. Contact us before you apply for an Administrative Review, a University immigration caseworker can talk through whether this is the right option for you.

Requesting an Administrative Review is your decision, and you do not have to challenge a refusal if you do not want to.

How an Administrative Review works

  • You apply online directly to the Home Office.
  • It costs £80. If your challenge is successful, this is refunded to you.

Important deadlines

You must submit your Administrative Review within:

  • 28 days of the date on your decision letter, if you applied for your visa from outside the UK.
  • 14 days of the date on your decision letter, if you applied for your visa from inside the UK.

These deadlines cannot be extended.

What an Administrative Review needs to show

To succeed, an Administrative Review must show a specific error, not just that you disagree with the outcome. This might include:

  • the interview record misrepresenting what you actually said
  • evidence you submitted not being properly considered
  • a procedural problem with how your interview was conducted

Potential outcomes of an Administrative Review

It helps to understand potential outcomes before you decide whether to request an Administration Review.

  • If you challenge the decision and it succeeds, the original refusal is cancelled entirely and removed from your record. You can reapply for a Student visa with a clean immigration history, and your £80 fee is refunded.
  • If you challenge the decision and it is unsuccessful, the original refusal remains on your record.

What a Student visa refusal could mean for your future

A refusal that stays on your record may affect future immigration applications, including for study, work, or travel, in the UK and potentially elsewhere. This applies whether the refusal stays on your record because you chose not to challenge it, or because a challenge was unsuccessful. A University immigration caseworker can talk you through what this means for your individual situation, contact us to find out more.
