What's it like to study at Northumbria?

Studying at Northumbria offers a great balance: well-equipped campuses, tutors who genuinely want you to succeed, and a really friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Even with how demanding the nursing degree can be, there's always support available and a strong community around you. It feels like a place where I'm not just learning theory, but actually growing into the nurse I want to become.

Best thing about studying Adult Nursing

The best part for me is how perfectly it blends theory with clinical practice; I get to learn skills first, then apply everything during placements, so I always feel prepared. My tutors are genuinely supportive and always there when I need guidance. It feels like I'm not just learning facts, but actually growing into a confident, caring nurse ready for the real world.

Favourite thing to do on campus / community

I usually head to the library or a quiet study space when I need to focus on essays or exams. Between lectures, I'll grab a drink and catch up with friends, or just take a quick walk around campus. Having everything close by is convenient, so it's easy to balance work and take a break.

Course & career goals / industry links

Adult nursing gets me straight to where I want to be: it leads to NMC registration, so I can start working as a qualified nurse as soon as I graduate. We spend half our time on placements with local NHS trusts, building real experience and contacts that often lead to job opportunities later. Northumbria works closely with healthcare providers, so everything I learn matches what's needed, leaving me fully prepared to step into the role.

A time you realised you were capable of more

During third year, I took charge of a whole bay of patients independently and felt really anxious at first, but I relied on everything I'd learned at Northumbria from practical sessions to what my lecturers taught me. Once I found my rhythm, it hit me: I could actually do this and was far more capable than I gave myself credit for. It showed me just how well the course had prepared me, and I realised I had grown so much more than I expected.

Support that boosted confidence / ambition

What's made the biggest difference is how approachable the tutors and support teams are: they never make me feel silly for asking questions, and they're always there if I'm feeling overwhelmed. The placements organised through Northumbria have been just as important, letting me work alongside experienced staff and see how everything I learn applies in real life. That mix of guidance at university and hands-on experience on the wards has given me the confidence I need to move forward.

Advice for someone considering Northumbria

Go in with an open mind and don't be afraid to ask for help: everyone here wants you to succeed. Make the most of your placements and the facilities, because that's where you'll really build your confidence and skills. It's hard work, but the support and experience you gain make it completely worth it.
