Our Alumni - Work For Us
Where are you from?
Malaysia
Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?
Had previously studied in Northumbria for my undergraduate degree. From then, I fell in love with the University and the City of Newcastle.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
The Cafes in Newcastle are absolute brilliant. Cosy, delicious coffee at an affordable price. And everything in the City is within walking distance.
What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?
The people here have surprised me. Not only are they friendly, but they welcome International Students with open arms, making us International Students, who are away from home, feel at home.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
Northumbria has a wide diversity of International Students and that's a great thing because the University offered oppoturnities to International Students to be able to study in a lovely city. It definitely helped me fit in when I first arrived.
What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?
I love everything about it. The 24/7 library helped in through my exams. Couldn't find a better library than this. The gym is awesome. New facilities and classes at a super reasonable prices. To sum it up - I love everything about the University!
Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?
It is hard to pick someone because the suprvisors and lecturers have provided me with all the helped that i needed. But if I really have to choose someone, it would be my guidance tutor Jane hodson. She was always there to provide support and guidance. She is someone who will keep herself updated with her student's performances and well being. She'd always kept our best interest in mind. The best thing about her is that she would go the extra miles for her students regardless of how minor the issues are.
Who has inspired you most at Northumbria University?
Jane hodson. Her passion and dedication towards her work impresses me. And i would like to be someone like her. Someone who enjoys her work and cares for her students in every possible way. I would like to be like her when I graduate and join the working class.
What is your favourite place on campus?
The library. Great place to hang out (at Basement) and at the same time a great place to study (different floors have different level of quietness) which is very convenient.
What is the best thing about your course?
The great thing about my course is that I actually had a chance to experience what it will feel like working as a barristers with deadlines coming, never ending work, and stress levels on the rise. But I love it because that is the life I want. Another great thing about the course is that it taught we skills that a barrister would need. The range of skills that were taught were not only essential but it gave students a chance to test themselves and do a pre-run before the actual job. This gave students a chance to train themselves through trials and errors so that when they graduate, they would be less likely to fall for the same mistakes.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?
What I have learn through my SPS sessions is that "If you fail, it is not the end of the world. You have to pick yourself up, learn from your mistake and try again because no one is perfect and there is no definite answer to anything".
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
A Barrister. The best skill I have learnt is advocacy. I'm not a confident person and I'm also shy around people. But the advocacy classes have forced me to stand in front of my classmates and present my case, and then receive constructive feedback for it. Something I would not have imagined myself doing. This has helped me overcome my lack of confidence. I am glad I did it and I'm glad that I chose this course because I am now a changed person and I'm greatful for the classes and the advice given.
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
You won't regret it.
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?
Confidence. Better communication skills. Discipline.
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Life changing experience.
Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
Definitely!
