Klaudia Jadwiga Mierswa

Klaudia Mierswa completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Twente, where she was awarded a BSc in European Studies. During her undergraduate programme, Klaudia specialised on migration and did a Minor in International Migration & Development at the University of Lund.

After obtaining her BSc, Klaudia continued with a joint-Masters programme at the University of Twente and the Westphalian Wilhelms-University. In 2013, she graduated with a MSc in European Studies and a MA in Political Sciences

In October 2013, Klaudia was awarded a PhD studentship by the University of Northumbria.

In many parts of the world, refugees flee their home countries due to violence, war, or the fear of persecution. The search for shelter and a life without fear often leads refugees to Member States of the European Union, as those countries are considered to be safe havens, respecting human rights.

The European Union is one of the main destination regions for asylum seekers, and therefore the Member States of the EU created a Common European Asylum System (CEAS) in 1999, in order to tackle the growing asylum challenges at the European level, and to streamline and harmonise the national asylum systems of the Member States, guaranteeing equal and fair treatment of asylum seekers.

However, over the years, the inadequate reception and living conditions of asylum seekers in various EU Member States has become the main topic of a heated public debate. One of the most prominent cases were the living conditions of asylum seekers in Greece, for which the Greek government was also condemned by the European Court of Justice (ECJ), as well as by the European Court of Human Rights.

In her PhD project, Klaudia examines the various legislative provisions that are in place in order to guarantee the protection of human rights of asylum seekers in various EU Member States, and analyses the extent to which these provisions are implemented, and what factors are influencing the Member States in their compliance with these provisions.
