Where are you from?
Gateshead
Why did you choose Northumbria University, Newcastle?
Northumbria University has amazing, up-to date facilities with all the resources you need to get through your course. The modern buildings add a touch of luxary to your life and as student, you want to feel as though you're getting the best from spending a great deal of money on the degree.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
Newcastle is a great city to so much and more. You will see so many different kinds of people going about their everyday life and there is so much to do. We have one of the best shopping centres in the region (Metro Centre and Intu Eldon Square) and so many different places to eat. Thanks to an increasing number of International Students in the area, there are more places to eat from Korean, Mexican, Japanese and of course, there is always fish and chips!
What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?
I've lived here all my life but being at Northumbria, it's always great to see people from all over the world and known they've chosen this University for a reason.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
Northumbria University have a wide range of staff and they're all as friendly as the next, which is something that will help you feel welcome, especially if you've travelled far to attend here.
What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?
The people I've met on the course has probably been the best part of coming to Northumbria University. With being one of two of the only British people in the class, it's amazing being surrounded and working with people from all over the world.
What is your favourite place on campus?
City Campus East has been my home for the last year so I would say this has been my favourite place so far. I love the mini Law library situated on the 1st floor because I can easily do my work there with no disturbance.
What is the best thing about your course?
Learning about new cultures from the people on my course and the lecturers treat you like adults, which makes a change from secondary school.
What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?
To not be afraid to do what you want, if you want something, go for it. There are no limitations of holding you back and only you can make something happen.
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
My short term goals are to gain as much experience in various industries and apply my existing knowledge and skills to different contexts. From working with people who are new to this country, it was an experience to tell them all about Newcastle, what to see and what to do, so I'll be able to apply this if I were to work in organisation that works with global clients.
Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?
To date, I've worked on two major projects with my current employer - one local business and one global business.
Have you taken up any opportunities to travel with your current course/undertake field trips? If so, please tell us about them.
Our particular course led to a Residiential Weekend in October 2013 which was one of the best experiences I've had to see what skills I was capable of, to work with people from different cultures and to generally spend time with them. The workshops and group exercises were fun to see how we all worked together and learn more about people.
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
It's important to keep your options open but Northumbria University have great facilities and staff that will support you. Going to univeristy in general doesn't necessarily mean that your eperience will be 100% happy and positive all the time but the University will support you 120% if you have any issues with your personal life, the course, your course mates or the workload.
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?
I've become a lot more aware of how I express myself and communicate around those that don't have English as a first language. The unfortunate Geordie accent and slang I have, has led to many misunderstandings in communication, but it all comes as part of the Newcastle lifestyle here at Northumbria University!
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Fun, Inspirational, Life-Changing.
Would you recommend Northumbria University to a friend?
Yes!
