Foundation Clearing Courses | Northumbria University

What is a Foundation Year?

A foundation year is an extra year of study at the start of a university course. It is a great way to build your skills, knowledge and confidence to prepare you for a degree course. On successful completion of a foundation year, you can progress to a wide range of our undergraduate courses.

Why study a foundation course?

It gives you the chance to experience university-style teaching and to get a feel for the campus, city and subjects that you’re interested in. You’ll get a rich understanding of your subject areas, alongside practical grounding in skills that will make it easier for you to progress onto undergraduate study.

If you’re unsure exactly what area of a subject you’re most interested in, a foundation year can be a great way of helping you focus your future study and career decisions.
