If your son or daughter has achieved the grades   they need for their firm choice university or college, then smile and celebrate. Their place will be automatically confirmed and they’ll be off on the next stage of their studies before you know it.

If they have just missed out on the grades and points needed, they may be accepted by their insurance choice institution. The best thing for them to do is check UCAS Track, which will show the status of their application.

If they have met or exceeded their conditional firm choice offer, UCAS Track will show the option to apply for an Adjustment place. This allows your son or daughter to change institution or course if they wish, if places are available.

What if they don’t get the grades they need?

Some students will not have gained the grades they need for their firm or insurance choice of university. That doesn’t mean they can’t go to university or college. They may still find a place on another course.

Every year, a large number of students use the UCAS Clearing process to find a place at university or college. It’s really not that unusual and many students have found a place at Northumbria University through Clearing.

We’ve got experienced staff on hand to support students through Clearing. Your son or daughter can call our Clearing Hotline on 0800 085 1085 and a specialist advisor will talk to them about what’s available and guide them through the entire process. We can only speak to students though, so sorry we can’t talk to you on their behalf.

For more advice, we’ve shared our top 10 tips to help you get the most out of Clearing and support your child through the process.

*Please note: we use the terms ‘parent’, ‘son’ and ‘daughter’ throughout the website for simplicity, but we appreciate that many of you may be carers, legal guardians or step-parents. This information is aimed at anyone who fulfils a parenting role for a young person in the UK who is considering a university education.
