What to Expect From a Virtual Open Day

It might not be possible for us to welcome you to our vibrant, city-centre campus at the moment, but that doesn't mean you can't get a feel for the place from wherever you are in the world.

We are pleased to be launching our exciting new virtual event platform this summer, where we'll run a series of Virtual Open Days to give you a taste of what you can expect when you decide to study with us.

Is there a programme for the events?

If you've pre-registered, we'll send you an email ahead of your chosen event with an overview of the specific sessions we'll be running on the day. From this email, you'll be able to click through to our event site, where you'll be able to select the sessions you're interested in attending - building your own, bespoke programme.

Why are we hosting Virtual Open Days?

We know how important it is for you to have enough time to make an informed decision about which university is right for you. To ensure you don’t miss out, we are putting together lots of useful content to help you discover Northumbria from the comfort of your own home.

How do I register?

You can sign up for your event by hitting the ‘register for a virtual event’ button on the open day page. You may have also received an email from us which will include a link to register.

Which event date should I register for?

We will be running five events which are split by subject area. For undergraduate, you can click the ‘which event should I register for?’ button on the open day page to help you decide which event is most suitable for you. For postgraduate, you can find a breakdown of each event on the open day page but if you're still unsure, please contact

I am interested in more than one subject area, can I book onto more than one event?

Yes, you can register for as many events as you like! If you’re interested in more than one subject area this is a great chance to find out about the different courses and speak to our staff and students to see which course is for you.

How do I access an event?

Closer to the event you will be sent a link to access the event via email. You will also be able to personalise your day and book the sessions most important to you. Details on how you can do this will also be sent via email.

Do I need to be on a PC/laptop to access it or can I use my mobile?

You can access the event via your mobile, however, to get the best from the event we would recommend using a PC or laptop. To fully participate in the event and view all live elements, we recommend you use Google Chrome. Other browsers which will enable you to use NU World, but potentially not access all parts of the event, are Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari and Mozilla Firefox.

What time will the event start and finish? Do I need to attend for the entire duration?

The events will begin at 10:00 BST and finish at 15:00. We will have content available for the whole event, but that does not mean you need to stay all day. Subject specific talks will run in the morning and be repeated after lunch, so you can choose your own itinerary.

What can I expect from the day?

When you log in on the day of the event, you'll see your unique programme straight away. This will stay with you throughout the event so you have a reminder of the sessions you're interested in, ensuring you don't miss a thing. There'll be lots of sessions to see, including:

  • Course information - will be available through live chat sessions twice during each event; once in the morning, and once again in the afternoon, in case one clashes with something else you're interested in. Receive specific information about the course you're interested in from our world-class academics
  • Subject sessions - available twice during each event; one morning sessions and one afternoon session. Listen live to our panel of experts as they discuss studying at Northumbria, and get a chance to ask questions
  • Access presentations on how to apply, how to fund your studies and your accommodation options. Live chat will be available throughout the whole event, so there'll be plenty of opportunity to ask questions our support teams any questions you might have
  • Access presentations on your specific subject of interest. Available throughout the event, discover the research projects we're undertaking and how we're using these to shape your learning
  • Take 360 degree tours of campus
  • Find out more about the local area including the bustling city of Newcastle and our beautiful coast and country
  • Hear from the real experts - our current students

Will I still have a chance to speak to staff and students like at an on-campus open day?

Yes absolutely. We want this to be as close to a regular open day as possible so there will be staff and students from all subject areas online throughout the day, that will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Will there be subject specific sessions?

Yes, we will be running subject specific sessions throughout the day. Our academics will be giving subject specific presentations just as they would an on-campus open day, as well as a live Q&A panel and a presentation on how their work is helping to #TakeonTomorrow.

Will I be able to find out about the university more generally?

We will have a wide range of presentations and content available to help you find out more about Northumbria. This will include student life, student finance, your new home and much more.

I am struggling to join the live sessions. How do I join?

Cameras and microphones are not required for the live sessions. Click 'X'on the right hand side of the live broadcast screen to close the message and join the live event.

Why is it taking a while for content to load?

We have some great content to share with you but some of the files are large. Bear with us – at busy times when there is a lot of people on the platform it may take a little while longer to load, but it will be worth the (very short) wait.

Will there be on-campus events taking place later this year?

Whilst we are still uncertain of what will happen, we are constantly monitoring the situation. If we are unable to hold the events on campus, we will continue to hold them virtually.
