Virtual city provides an interactive platform for architects, planners, heritage and the arts

The creation of the Virtual Newcastle Gateshead (VNG) City Model, a dynamic virtual model of Newcastle and Gateshead, was developed by the University’s Virtual Reality and Visualisation Group in partnership with Gateshead and Newcastle City Councils.

VNG has proved to be a powerful communication tool, used by architects and developers to provide accurate imagery for their clients and stakeholders.  It also explored how new builds will affect existing buildings, as well as transport schemes to look how people move around a city.  The model has been used in 12 recent major urban development projects including the £150million development of Gateshead’s Trinity Square and Quayside developments.

It has also been used to reconstruct past images of the region, including medieval Newcastle and Hadrian’s Wall, and has featured in arts projects.

Digitising the construction industry

BIM Academy Enterprises Limited is an innovative joint venture between Northumbria and Ryder Architecture. It is impartial and industry-facing, undertaking consultancy. BIM Academy works closely in the UK with industry bodies such as RIBA Enterprises and has been recognised internationally, winning both the Build Qatar Live and Build Sydney Live competitions.
