North East Group for the Mathematics of Complexity and Multi-Scale Phenomena

The North East Group for the Mathematics of Complexity and Multi-Scale Phenomena is a joint initiative linking researchers in mathematics at Durham University, Newcastle University, and Northumbria University.

The initiative aims to build a sustained regional forum for collaboration in applied mathematics, bringing together expertise in the theory and applications of complex systems and multi-scale phenomena. By creating regular opportunities for exchange, it seeks to strengthen existing links across the three institutions, stimulate new interdisciplinary collaborations, and support the development of future joint research activities.

Our interests span a broad range of topics, including nonlinear dynamics, deterministic and stochastic systems, fluid dynamics, wave phenomena, mathematical biology, ecological modelling, statistical inference, and data-driven approaches to pattern formation and complex systems. The group also aims to foster dialogue with external partners where mathematical modelling can contribute to real-world challenges.

About the initiative

This programme is designed as a series of regular joint meetings across the North East, creating a platform for researchers to share current work, discuss emerging directions, and build a stronger regional community in applied and interdisciplinary mathematics.

A particular emphasis of the initiative is on supporting postgraduate researchers and early-career colleagues, providing opportunities for visibility, networking, and interaction across institutional boundaries.

Upcoming workshop

The next workshop in the series will take place on 11 June.

The programme will include an invited keynote lecture, a selection of short contributed talks, and poster presentations, with time set aside for discussion and informal networking.

Aims

  • Strengthen collaboration in applied mathematics across Durham, Newcastle, and Northumbria
  • Provide a regional forum for research exchange on complexity and multi-scale phenomena
  • Support postgraduate researchers and early-career mathematicians
  • Encourage interdisciplinary links and future joint funding activity
  • Develop a sustained North-East network in mathematical modelling and computation

This initiative is supported by a Scheme 3 grant from the London Mathematical Society.
