The sport and health industry expansion necessitates professionalism and the need for ongoing career development. Northumbria University is one of the original providers of sport degrees in the UK.

Our Successful Alumni

Past graduates have included successful medal winning athletes such as Victoria Pendleton, Steve Cram, Jamie Noon, Martin Corry and Chris Cook. Our graduates go onto high-profile roles throughout the world, demonstrating why Northumbria is ranked in the Top 25 in the UK for graduates in highly skilled employment (UK Full-time undergrads. Graduate Outcomes 2019/20).

We are also ranked 21st in the UK for Sport Science (Complete University Guide, 2023), a great testament to both staff and students.

Facilities

Our teaching facilities are second to none and we pride ourselves on the applied nature of our courses and our teaching excellence. Our expert staff have a reputation for friendliness and proactively encourage interactive teaching styles that lead to a great environment for teaching and learning. Most courses are accredited by professional bodies.

Placements and Opportunities Abroad

We attract many students from around the world, which adds to the “richness” of our work and results in truly global graduates who have the skills to work in an intercultural capacity, a key skill for many organisations in today’s competitive marketplace. Many programmes also involve placements, field trips, international guest lecturers and practical assessments, which again adds a unique dimension.

We have an excellent reputation for research and consultancy and produce world leading (4 star) research, which has been recognised by the Research Excellence Framework (2021). Such pioneering work allows us to inform our teaching practice and also allows our students to work on “real life” projects with industry, again enhancing the applied skills necessary upon graduation.

With such a wide variety of choice of programmes, enthused and inspiring teaching staff, some of the best facilities in the country, can you afford not to choose the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation at Northumbria?
