During the month of October we are cycling to raise money for the University’s Higher Education Without Barriers Fund.

We are inviting Northumbria’s students, alumni, staff and business partners to sign-up to cycle between 30 and 300 miles during October – either individually or as part of a group – to raise money for our students.

As part of this month-long cycle-a-thon, a team of Northumbria alumni and staff will be cycling - 300 miles over four days - from London to Newcastle Campus. So, if you don’t want to cycle, but still want to get involved and support Northumbria students, you can sponsor the Team

To be entered into a draw to win a year’s Sport Central membership, simply register to take part and fundraise through our JustGiving page, NU-Cycle 2023 (T&Cs apply).

Get on your bike!

The Higher Education without Barriers Fund was launched in January 2022, to enable motivated students from all backgrounds to access and succeed at Northumbria. So far over £2.5m has been raised and over 2,000 students have benefitted from outreach activities, scholarships, hardship bursaries, mental health and wellbeing initiatives and student volunteering and enterprise activities.

Sport as an enabler of social mobility is an important part of the Fund and money raised from NU-Cycle will provide more students with:

  • alternate routes into study, with sport scholarships, so they can pursue their degree and develop their talents as athletes, coaches or officials;
  • sport volunteering and work experience opportunities that will help them to develop new networks and enhance their leadership and employability skills;
  • learning resources, kit and equipment to reach their potential in sport and increase diversity in the sporting arena;
  • opportunities to take part in physical activity, developing their teamworking skills, and enabling them to experience the benefits of an active lifestyle; and
  • mental health and wellbeing initiatives to support them during their studies.

To raise more money for the Fund, a Sport Dinner is being held at St James’ Park on Friday 20 October 2023.

Northumbria’s students, alumni, staff and business partners are invited to sign-up to cycle between 30 and 300 miles during October – either individually or as part of a group – to raise money for our students.

When you sign-up you’ll receive a fundraising pack with everything you need to get started, including information about free spin and exercise bike sessions, how to access bike helmets and bikes, and step-by-step guidance on how to fundraise. If you track your ride with the Strava app, you’ll be able to join our cycling community for your chance to appear on the leaderboard.
