Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences

Professor Tom Lawson

Tom Lawson was appointed as Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences in June 2017.  Tom came to Northumbria University as Professor in History in 2013 from the University of Winchester where he had been Professor of Holocaust Studies and Head of Research in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.  In 2014 he was appointed Associate Dean (Academic) and had been Acting Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor since September 2016.

Tom is a historian of the Holocaust and genocide.  He is the author and editor of several books including Debates on the Holocaust (Manchester University Press, 2010) and The Last Man: a British Genocide in Tasmania (IB Tauris, 2014).  He is the co-editor of the journal Holocaust Studies and was previously a mid-career fellow of the British Academy.  Tom is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.  He is currently working on several related projects including a large edited collection on Britain and the Holocaust to be published in 2020 and a further general study of genocide in the British world.  A full list of publications is available here.
