Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor for Arts, Design, and Social Sciences

Professor Caron Gentry is Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts, Design and Social Sciences at Northumbria University.

Caron leads on the strategic priorities for the faculty, particularly in developing interdisciplinary research and education projects, so that the University’s research is highly innovative and the education programmes are sector-leading.

Caron works closely with the University Executive shaping and delivering the University’s Vision, Strategy and supporting plans. She leads and directs the faculty’s activities and drives performance to achieve transformational change within the context of the University’s Vision, Strategy, plans, policies and procedures.

Caron is responsible for the overall performance of the faculty, including all aspects of academic provision, achieving targets and objectives for the faculty and University, and for the management, leadership and effective deployment of the faculty’s resources and estate.

Caron serves as the Senior Sponsor for Gender Equality, which supports Northumbria’s Strategy 2030 ambition to be a place of fairness, where all people belong.  The faculty’s work on the Strategy 2030 Experiential Learning commitment, illuminates the importance of its subject areas to local, regional, national, and international socio-political development which supports unlocking an inclusive economy and in driving social mobility.  As our researchers and students create new knowledge through their research, they work to generate behavioural and cultural change that will help humanity find answers to the challenges that face us all.

Caron sits on the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art Board of Governors, the Editorial Board of the Studies on Critical Terrorism Journal and the Editorial Board for the International Feminist Journal of Politics.

Prior to joining Northumbria University, Caron held multiple roles at University St Andrews including Professor in the School of International Relations and Head, School of International Relations.

Caron went to Westlake High School in Austin, Texas and achieved a BA at Mount Holyoke College and a PhD at the University of St Andrews.

Caron’s main research area looks at how terrorism and political violence are gendered subjects.  Her work began by looking at women labelled as terrorists, publishing Disordered Violence: How Gender, Race, and Heteronormativity Structure Terrorism (University of Edinburgh Press, 2020), (with Laura Sjoberg) Mothers, Monsters, Whores: Women’s Violence in Global Politics (Zed 2007) and Beyond Mothers, Monsters, Whores: Thinking about Women’s Violence in Global Politics (Zed 2015) as well as numerous articles in leading International Relations journals.  Additionally, she publishes on Feminist Political Theology with books including Offering Hospitality (University of Notre Dame Press, 2013) and This American Moment (Oxford University Press, 2018).
