International appointment for law academic

Northumbria University law academic Professor Mohamed Badar has been appointed to the International Bar Association (IBA’s) influential War Crimes Committee (WCC).

As the Middle East and North Africa Regional Forum Liaison Officer for the WCC, Professor Badar will use his position to help promote justice and uphold the principles of accountability as well as to inspire and encourage young lawyers in the field of international criminal law – key aims of the committee.  The WCC is the only IBA committee focused specifically on atrocity crimes and international criminal law and practice. An appointment to such a prestigious and globally recognised organisation reflects both Professor Badar’s own standing as a law professor, and Northumbria Law School’s growing international reputation for teaching and research.

One of Professor Badar’s first engagements on behalf of the IBA WCC will be to host a joint symposium with Northumbria Law School on Legal Pluralism and Its Significance to the Work of the International Criminal Court . This one day hybrid conference is free to attend either virtually or in person at Northumbria on May 13 from 13:00 pm.

Professor Badar said: “This is an exciting and challenging post, and one I am humbled to accept. The WCC undertakes crucially important legal work alongside the IBA Human Rights Institute, and I am looking forward to offering my support in the Middle East and North Africa region. I am also delighted to be hosting the first ever joint symposium between the IBA and Northumbria Law School. With highly distinguished speakers this will I’m sure be an  insightful and lively event, and I would encourage anyone with an interest in international criminal justice, especially our students, to register.”

The IBA is foremost organisation for international legal practitioners, bar associations and law societies. Established in 1947, shortly after the creation of the United Nations, the IBA was born out of the conviction that an organisation made up of the world's bar associations could contribute to global stability and peace through the administration of justice.
