Our Work on Defence  

We play an important role in enhancing the sovereign defence capabilities of the UK and allied nations through defence-related research, education and knowledge exchange. We also engage in research involving the wider Armed Forces community which includes serving personnel, veterans and families. This work supports our Northumbria 2030 strategic ambitions.  

In recognition of our expertise, we were selected as one of the 35 founding members of the UK’s Defence Universities Alliance (DUA), a UK government initiative connecting universities with the Ministry of Defence and the armed forces to advance research, skills and collaboration.   

Engagement with the defence sector ensures our research addresses questions of genuine national and global significance. Our partnerships help attract investment that benefit the regional economy, and beyond, and provide our students and graduates with the professional skills and networks that open doors throughout their careers.  

Our partnerships and collaborations meet our ethical standards, as governed by our due diligence and ethics processes.   We do not engage in partnerships that violate UK legislation and/or the policy of the UK Government.
