Dr Engy Ghoniem

Senior Research Fellow

Department: Mechanical and Construction Engineering

Dr. Engy Ghoniem is a highly accomplished researcher and educator with over 15 years of expertise in materials science, smart materials, and renewable energy systems, particularly focusing on graphene, carbon-based materials, and their applications in energy storage. She earned her BSc and MSc in Production – Mechanical Engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt, and completed her PhD at the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology in 2017. Following her doctoral studies, she returned to Alexandria University as a lecturer, where she honed her research and teaching skills.

Dr. Ghoniem’s work spans a wide range of sustainable technologies and energy systems. She has made extensive contributions to supercapacitors, fuel cells, and batteries and their integration into electric vehicles. Her groundbreaking research in energy storage has been applied to the automotive industry, where she has explored innovative methods for improving performance and sustainability.

Between 2019 and 2022, Dr Ghoniem held several postdoctoral and teaching fellow positions at the University of Southampton, UK, where she contributed to significant EPSRC-funded projects, including the TransEnergy – Road 2 Rail Energy Exchange (R2REE) and the UK-India Clean Energy Centre (JUICE). These roles allowed her to deepen her research in clean energy and sustainable transport systems, solidifying her reputation as a leader in the field.

Since 2022, Dr Ghoniem has been a Senior Research Fellow at Northumbria University, where she manages several high-profile European projects focused on sustainability, ecodesign, and innovative material applications. Among these, she has made significant contributions to the SALIENT project, where her novel use of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) in the CFRP FIAT PANDA crashbox represents a critical advancement in material applications for the automotive industry.

In addition to her research, Dr. Ghoniem plays a pivotal role in the ZEvRA project. There, she leads the training and sustainability awareness initiatives, working with key stakeholders to drive eco-consciousness in the automotive sector. Her leadership extends to overseeing ecodesign development teams across multiple projects and collaborating with major OEMs to foster sustainable design practices in the industry.

An accomplished educator, Dr. Ghoniem is passionate about teaching and mentoring. Her experience spans multiple institutions, where she has developed and delivered mechanical engineering and sustainable design curricula. She is committed to inspiring the next generation of engineers and researchers to innovate in ways that support a more sustainable future.
