Dr. Gao joined Northumbria University in 2011.

Dr. Gao is currently the Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, ISA Transactions, and IEEE Access. He is the editorial board member of Renewable Energy.


As a Guest Editor, he organised the special issues ``Data-driven approaches for complex industrial systems’’, ``Real-time fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control’’, ``Real-time monitoring, prognosis and resilient control for wind energy systems’’, and ``Digital twinning: integrating AI-ML and big data analytics for virtual representation’’ respectively in IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (2013), IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics (2015), Renewable Energy (2018),  and IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (2020).

Dr. Gao is the senior member of IEEE, and HEA fellow.
