Dr Vincent Tong, Associate Professor

Vincent is a University Director of Learning and Teaching in the Teaching Excellence Team, and he leads on institution-wide education projects related to equality, diversity and inclusion.  He is the Deputy Chair of the Race Equality Charter Self-Assessment Team. 

As an academic developer, Vincent is interested in research-education-outreach linkages, values-based pedagogies, distributed leadership and working with students as partners.  He was awarded a Principal Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA) in 2015 for his sustained strategic leadership in higher education, and he has been involved in mentoring academics and reviewing UK national teaching awards and HEA Fellowships at all levels.  He was previously the strategic lead of technology-enhanced learning at Birkbeck College London, and he has served as the strategic lead of a university-wide curriculum initiative at University College London.

As a physical scientist, Vincent has led international research projects on the transdisciplinary applications of seismic imaging to oceanography, geology, astrophysical and petroleum sciences.  He was a key Principal Investigator of a research consortium funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council.  He has been serving as the founding Secretary of the Education Section of the American Geophysical Union since 2018, and he has been leading on initiatives to bring international scientists, educators and policymakers across Earth and space sciences together.

Vincent read Physics at Imperial College London and did his doctoral research in Geophysics at Trinity College Cambridge.  He has a BA in Humanities and an MEd specialising in educational leadership, science education and educational inquiry from the Open University.  Before joining Northumbria in 2020, he was a Principal Teaching Fellow (Associate Professor (Teaching)) at University College London.
