The Partner

Founded in 1956, the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) is Singapore’s oldest not-for-profit professional institute for lifelong learning.  MDIS has a history of providing training and educational services to the community.

MDIS offers accredited courses in Business and Management, Engineering, Fashion Design, Information Technology, Health and Life Sciences, Mass Communications, Psychology and Travel, and Tourism and Hospitality Management. In September 2008, MDIS set up its first overseas campus in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan in Central Asia, to offer world-class tertiary education to students from the Central Asia region. A second overseas campus is due to open its doors at Iskandar in Johor Malaysia in 2016.

Northumbria University programmes are however delivered at the S$35 million MDIS Singapore Campus at Stirling Road which occupies a three-hectare site and boasts over 70 well-equipped classrooms, multiple lecture theatres and Science and Technology laboratories.

The Partnership

The partnership between MDIS and Northumbria University commenced in 2010. This originally began with the BSc (Hons) Biotechnology programme. The multi-cultural city-state of Singapore is Asia’s fastest-growing bio-cluster, presenting opportunities for students aspiring to develop a career in sciences.

The specialist area offers students the opportunity to develop subject-based expertise and skills, through consideration of practices adopted in this field globally, ensuring the programme is relevant to an international community of students. Graduates will be well positioned to support the industryin its efforts to accelerate the drug discovery process with next-generation technologies, while focusing on key diseases such as cancer, metabolic diseases, neurological diseases, infectious diseases and eye diseases.

Building on the success of the BSc (Hons) Biotechnology programmes, the MSc Biotechnology programme was added to the portfolio of opportunities at MDIS in November 2013. This enabled those graduates wishing to progress their studies to a higher level to do so. The science provision was further strengthened in 2015 with the addition of the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programme.

In March 2013 an evolutionary programme was validated for franchise, the MSc Health Sciences (Management). This is specifically designed for graduates interested in healthcare management, attracting interest from a wide range of professionals and non-professionals working in the healthcare arena who wish to advance their leadership and management knowledge and skills.
