The Department of Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation is committed to delivering excellence in every aspect of work it undertakes. We recognise that in a world that is constantly changing, we need to provide stakeholders with the current knowledge and expertise to succeed whether they are students, researchers, employers or business.

With a strong reputation for teaching and research excellence, our range of innovative and exciting programmes produce global graduates who have benefited from learning and teaching and “cutting edge” facilities, described as some of the best in the country, including:

  • Specialist physiology, biomechanics and nutrition laboratories

  • Clinical skills centre and indoor sprint track

Our students have the opportunity to learn in a friendly, open and supportive environment on programmes that are accredited and endorsed by professional and national governing bodies. This ensures that we are providing students with the right attributes for when they graduate in the profession of their choice.

Students also have the opportunity to undertake exciting placements within organisations across the globe. These have included the International Olympic Committee (Switzerland); the World Association of Sport Management (Taiwan); Adidas (Germany); England Netball (UK); the Football Association (UK); Primary Care Trust (UK) and La Manga Sport Resort (Spain). This enables our students to gain very applied expertise, while also developing contacts and a network which is vital in today’s competitive job market.

Staff are internationally renowned within their disciplines, with many sitting on the boards of international federations and acting as advisors to industry. Our research is pioneering and is funded by high-profile industrial partners and prestigious funding agencies. It underpins our taught programmes, in addition to informing practitioners and Government policy. As such, Northumbria is now ranked 5th in the UK for research power in Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, according to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, with 90% of our research publications rated as being world-leading or internationally excellent. The department also provides bespoke help and advice within a range of industries and professional bodies in the areas of: contractual research - Berghaus, GlaxoSmithKline, Nova International; continuing professional development - Lawn Tennis Association, FIBA; and consultancy – Commonwealth Games, English Institute of Sport, Newcastle United Football Club.
