MW4000 - Promoting Normal Physiological Process in Midwifery Care: Anatomy & Physiology

You will learn through interactive lectures, seminars, guided and independent learning using a variety of learning strategies, including quizzes and formative tests. The lectures will cover theories that will enable you to complete guided work, which will then be discussed in seminar sessions.

Support will include feedback from tutors during group work within interactive lectures and seminars, which will allow questions to be answered promptly. The seminars will also provide an opportunity for you to receive feedback on how your academic abilities are developing. In-class and online formative tests will be used throughout the module, to allow you to assess your personal learning. Resources will be available to you on the electronic learning platform (BBU and tutors may be contacted for support. A group tutorial will provide academic support focussed on the assessment tasks. A revision session in preparation for the assessment is provided and will include a shortened mock version as a formative assessment to provide further support.
The University Libraries at both Coach Lane Campus and City Campus offer an extensive collection of material, both hard copy and electronic, access to international databases and training in information retrieval. 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the non-pregnant female including hormonal cycles, ovulation and fertilization
2. Develop an understanding of the development and growth of the fetus including the physiological transition at birth.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of reproductive health and physiology during the perinatal period.

4. Identify women’s diverse needs and circumstances and recognise the impact these have on interpretation of physiological parameters.

Formative assessment:

Verbal formative feedback will be given within each session, to enhance your understanding of your academic performance.
Formative assessments such as quizzes and example MCQ’s will be available on the BBU to enable self-assessment of learning relating to each learning outcome.

Summative assessment:

Exam: 90-minutes. 25 MCQ and 5 short answer questions

This module aims to provide you with knowledge and understanding of life sciences applied to midwifery practice and is in keeping with the Framework for Quality Maternal and Newborn Care (QMNC), (Renfrew et al, 2014) . The subjects include anatomy, physiology, genetics, pharmacology and microbiology, introducing you to content which underpins safe midwifery practice and the assessment and promotion of physiological processes. It is positioned at the beginning of the programme as foundational knowledge for the midwifery programme. Formative assessment throughout the module aims to enhance your learning in preparation for this and the summative assessment.
