MW4001 - Universal Care & Adaptation to Pregnancy

You will learn through a variety of teaching and learning strategies including interactive lectures, seminars, workshops, guided and independent learning. The lectures will cover theories that will enable you to complete guided work, which will then be discussed in seminar and practical sessions. Reflection on practice experiences will allow you to apply current evidence and ensure you are appropriately prepared for practice as a midwife.

Adhering to Universal Design for Learning principles, two options for authentic assessment are offered in this module, allowing students to optimise choice and autonomy to support engagement and demonstrate learning and capability.

Support will include feedback from tutors during group work within interactive lectures and seminars, which will allow for knowledge checking and questions to be answered promptly. In-class and online formative tests will be used throughout the module, to allow you to assess your personal learning. The seminars will also provide an opportunity for you to receive feedback on how your academic abilities are developing and an opportunity to receive peer feedback. Resources will be available to you on the electronic learning platform (BBU) and tutors can be contacted for support. A group tutorial will provide academic support focussed on the assessment task.

Formative assessments include class tests and verbal formative feedback. Students will be provided an opportunity to attend a peer reviewed poster development workshop and complete mock examination questions.

Summative:
Option 1: 15-minute case study face to face poster presentation and submitted to Turnitin.

This module aims to develop the knowledge and skills required to start your journey to become a kind, compassionate midwife. You will work in partnership with women and families and understand the essential role of the midwife in supporting safe care in relation to the Framework for Quality and Newborn Care (QMNC) (Renfrew et al, 2014) and the practice category of Assessment, Screening and Care Planning. During this module you will explore the universal care processes all women need in the antenatal and postnatal period, to enable a positive outcome. This module is a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops and independent learning where targeted formative assessment and feedback is embedded to enhance your learning in preparation for clinical practice and the summative assessment. All module content will reflect evidence informing care and practice; a professional requirement as indicated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
