SM9725 - Entrepreneurship and Sustainable International Development

What will I learn on this module?

This module will consider entrepreneurship in developing and emerging economies. The importance of developing entrepreneurial activity in the developing world/emerging economies is identified. Historic and live cases of entrepreneurial practice are identified in the context of sustainable international development and the Sustainable Development Goals.

During the module you will explore: entrepreneurial models for developing/emerging economies; the importance of entrepreneurial activity for developing/emerging economies in terms of stimulating economic growth, innovation, competitiveness, and alleviating poverty; barriers to entrepreneurship in developing/emerging economies; drivers to entrepreneurship in developing/emerging economies.

How will I learn on this module?

The module is research led and will use a mix of contemporary research, and historic and live case studies to apply a critical entrepreneurial lens to look at substantive issues in sustainable international development. At the end of the module you will be expected to be able to:

• Critically evaluate entrepreneurship and its environment in developing and emerging economies
• Develop a systematic understanding of the theory and practice of entrepreneurship in a developing and emerging economy context
• Critically understand drivers to effective entrepreneurial behaviour in developing and emerging economies
• Evaluate and identify barriers to entrepreneurship in a developing/emerging economy.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

The module takes place across the semester 2. The teaching is supported by a teaching and learning plan which sets out independent learning, directed study, session recordings, reading and activities prior to, and for, each of those sessions. All learning and teaching materials are available to you in various formats on our e-learning portal. Directed learning will centre upon a range of activities including pre-reading and preparation for interactive activities. Independent learning will centre upon you identifying and pursuing areas of interest in relation to the subject area. Formative feedback will be provided to you during seminars.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

What will I be expected to achieve?

You will develop the necessary knowledge and understanding to develop a critical entrepreneurial perspective regarding sustainable international development.

How will I be assessed?

The module will be assessed by an individual essay and a group proposal.

In the first assignment you will critically explore a key issue regarding entrepreneurship and a chosen sustainable international development issue [ML0 1-4]. 60%.

In the second assignment your team will develop a full costed and resourced proposal for an entrepreneurship sustainable development initiative [ML0 1-4]. 40%.

Module abstract

This module explores how the skills and tools available to entrepreneurs can be used to support and reach sustainable international development objectives. These skills are critical in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, such as alleviating poverty, mitigating climate change and creating a more balanced world.

The module uses a critical entrepreneurship lens to explore contemporary international development issues, using a mixture of research and facilitated discussion with historic and live case studies. The assessments reflect this focus, with an individual essary on an issue relevant to you, and a team developed proposal for an entrepreneurship initiative that aims to make a difference.

The module will develop your ability to look critically at contemporary issues, but also help you demonstrate how you can use your entrepreneurship skills ethically to have a sustainable impact.
