TE7064 - Professional Enquiry in Teaching and Learning

You will learn through a combination of university-based and school-based opportunities that aim to underpin professional learning with academic knowledge and critical understanding. During your university days, you will have opportunities to reflect on your school-based experience and develop an appreciation of the importance of integrating practice and formal theory. Your immersion within school, supported by the expertise and experience of University based tutors will ensure your learning is grounded in current best practice and research Key note lectures will be led by University staff with research expertise in Social Justice, Equality & Diversity and Inclusion; and supported by lead school practitioners where appropriate. You will be supported as you engage in further reading and study to extend your critical understanding of the issues related to the topics introduced throughout the module and this will help you to develop a response to the associated assessment task.

Successful academic achievement requires a system of robust support and guidance to help you focus on your learning needs. In addition to the pastoral support you will receive, the tutors involved in delivering this module will provide guidance and academic counselling to ensure that you are able to confidently engage with the academic rigour of this module. This dialogue will be face to face in lectures, seminars or tutorials and is an essential aspect of the programme assessment for learning strategy. Extensive support is also accessible online as part of the University’s commitment to technology enhanced learning. This employs the use of the e-learning portal (Blackboard including Pebble+) and social networking and collaborative tools.
A central feature the academic support available to you is the service provided by the University Library. This 24/7 service caters for all your learning needs, has extensive access to electronic texts and tutorials that will directly support the development of academic skills aimed at improving your critical thinking and analytical writing.

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

Formative Assessment
University based days will be structured to provide opportunities for you to consider and explore the topics introduced. Feedback on your interpretation and developing understanding of these concepts will be formative, informal and be central to the discussion and interactions you have as part of your engagement with the academic and practice focused aspects of your training. You will draw upon this as you consider your response to the summative assessment in this module.

Summative Assessment
Summative assessment will be through submission of a reflective and analytical assignment of 4,500 words that focuses on one of the topics introduced as part of this module

TE7063

This module complements TE7063 and will help you to fully understand the role of the teacher and its complexities within a dynamic education system. You will learn about some of the key social and political contexts within which education sits and how these influence your school based practice. You will be guided and supported by the university tutor team, as well as your school based mentors. Both teams will help you to reflect on your school-based experiences and develop an informed perspective as you learn about specific issues facing education. Your professional understanding and employability will be strengthened as a result of your learning in this module and you will develop a critical understanding of how research at the forefront of the discipline supports your professional capacity and effectiveness in the classroom.
