Frequently Asked Questions

When it is time to enrol with us, you will be sent an email to your personal email address with instructions on how to do so. For programmes that start in September, this email will usually be sent out towards the end of August.

If you are an international student who requires immigration permission to study in the UK, you will need to have uploaded the required visa and arrival documentation for your right to study check before you enrol. Your invitation to enrol will be sent once your documentation has been checked and confirmed by the university. You must complete enrolment by the deadline shown on your Confirmation of Studies (CAS).

If your programme begins in September and have not heard from us by the end of August, or if you have a different intake date and have not heard from us six weeks before your start date of your programme, please:

• Check your inbox carefully. including your junk and spam folders.
• Make sure you have submitted all required documents during the application and Right to Study processes (International students only).

How to enrol

All students need to enrol by completing a single online task made up of a series of sections. To access this task:

• Log on to Northumbria's Student Portal by entering the username and password sent to you in your enrolment invitation.
• Select the 'Enrol' link from the main menu.
• Complete the sections thoroughly, including uploading a passport-style photograph for your student Smartcard if it is your first time studying with us.
• Submit the completed task and await your confirmation of enrolment email.

As a university that sponsors international students, we are required by law to confirm that you have the relevant immigration permission to study in the UK. We do this by checking your visa and travel documents. You must submit these documents to us to complete this check before you can complete your University enrolment.

If you have completed the online enrolment task and submitted all relevant documents, please allow up to 2 working days for your confirmation email to arrive. If it has been longer than this, please contact our frontline support service Ask4Help via this contact form or on (+44)191 227 46 46 for advice. 
 

It is extremely important to arrive on campus in time to attend your timetabled programme induction sessions and Welcome Week activities. This is when you will meet your academic team and fellow students and learn key information about your programme and University life. 

If you cannot arrive in time for the start of your programme, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can offer the right advice.

Your unique username and a temporary password can be found in your welcome email when you first join Northumbria University.

Your username is your 8 digit student number preceded by a letter. Your initial password is made up of lowercase and uppercase letters, and numbers. 

 

• An example of a computer username is W20231234.
• An example of a temporary password is Xzzzzz9m.

You should use these details to log into systems and platforms including your Student Portal for enrolment. Your username will stay with you throughout your time at Northumbria but you are advised to change your initial password after your first login.

If you have lost or forgotten your username or password:

• You can reset your password using the DUO Multifactor Authentication app if you have a UK mobile number.

• If you have an international mobile number or have not yet registered for the DUO app, please contact IT Chat.

Your timetable will be available once it has been published online and only after you have enrolled and your accounts have been activated. Please allow up to 2 working days after receiving your confirmation of enrolment for your timetable to show. Please note that teaching timetables are not always fully populated until close to your programme start date.

You are welcome to explore our City and Coach Lane campuses as soon as you arrive into Newcastle. The University along with Northumbria Students' Union, Northumbria Sport and our accommodation teams all provide a number of welcome activities on and around campus for you to get involved in - some of which take place before teaching has even begun. You can explore campus facilities and Welcome Week activities in your Student Portal. 

For the majority of programmes, welcome week begins on Monday 21 September - your timetable for that week will include details of any programme induction sessions that you should attend. Most teaching timetables begin week commencing Monday 28 September.

You can see the location of your classes and sessions in your timetable, denoted by a building code and room number. We have maps and other guidance available to help you find your way around on your Student Portal and in the NU Connect App. There will also be friendly staff around to help you navigate your first few days and you should Ask4Help if you have any questions or problems.

If you have any specific questions, our frontline service Ask4Help is a good place to start but please note that due to data protection regulations, we are unable to discuss individual student details without the consent of the individual. We encourage students themselves to be the main point of contact with the University.

All students can access Ask4Help online via the Student Portal (which contains over 300 help and support articles), in person on campus or by telephone. We also have teams of specialist services who can offer tailored support on all aspects of student life and study.
