Our Alumni - Work For Us
Hayley chose to study at Northumbria after visiting an open day during her A-Levels. She recalls how friendly and motivated the staff were and knew they would help her get the best degree that she could.
Did you find Northumbria University welcoming?
The university is very welcoming, when you first arrive the lecturers make sure you feel settled and are always around if you need any help or advice. In classes, everyone is in the same situation as you, so it’s very easy to make new friends.
What do you think of Newcastle and what are your favourite things to do?
Newcastle is a friendly, vibrant place where absolutely everyone can find something to do. New bars and restaurants open all of the time so you’re never stuck for somewhere different to go.
What have you enjoyed most about coming to Northumbria University?
I have really enjoyed the way we learn new things in practical ways, and making friends for life.
Who has helped you the most since coming to Northumbria?
The MFL department staff. They go out of their way to make sure you get all the help you need.
Have you joined any teams or been involved in any volunteer projects?
I have been involved in the Routes into Languages programme. My highlights have been spending more time with the French students and their side of the department and meeting Erasmus students from all over Europe.
What is the best thing about the BA French and Spanish degree at Northumbria?
Absolutely the best thing about this course is having the opportunity to go abroad for a year – and get paid for it.
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned that will be of use in your future career?
In the future I would like to have a job where I can use my languages and travel. Through studying this degree I have learned so many skills, but the most useful for a future career have to be, problem solving, confidence and communication.
Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?
On my year abroad I taught in a primary school. It was an amazing experience where I got to know a new place in great detail and travel all around Spain.
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
For anyone considering a language degree, if you want a vibrant environment with constant support and modern learning, Northumbria is the place for you.
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at Northumbria University, Newcastle
Since being at Northumbria University I have become more confident in my skills and ability to find a job.
