What's it like to study at Northumbria?

Northumbria is a great place to study, with its inviting community and kind and inspiring lecturers. I am based on Coach Lane Campus, which is a smaller but energetic place, with good amenities such as the library, cafeteria and colourful vibrant places to socialise and do university work. I still access the library at City Campus as it is closer to where I live, and this is also a brilliant library with tons of books, journal articles and more to help with my studies.

Best thing about studying Occupational Therapy

The opportunity my course has given to me to make meaningful friendships, and to gain amazing experience in the real working world. I have 3 placements in each year of my course, and these are valuable to knowing I have chosen the right path for my career. These also give me the understanding of different specialised areas of occupational therapy, such as mental health, physical health and more. I have learnt so much on these placements, and I'm looking forward to my upcoming placement in my final year.

Favourite thing to do on campus / community

I enjoy studying in the library, it's a vibrant and happy place. I also enjoy spending time in Greenhouse coffee shop studying or catching up with friends. I definitely feel part of a community.

Course & career goals / industry links

We have placements in each year of study, two 6-week placements and one 12-week placement in final year. This helps me think about my future, as well as pushing me out of my comfort zone whilst I'm still in education to try and achieve the best results I can.

A time you realised you were capable of more

Probably completing my first placement within Occupational Therapy. I was so nervous to begin with, but by the end my confidence had grown, and I was able to do so much more than I ever imagined.

Support that boosted confidence / ambition

I've had help from the Northumbria Wellbeing team, which is made up of a supportive team and have helped me with university based problems as well as personal ones. This has helped my confidence a lot. Also, joining societies each year and making friends has boosted my self esteem. Knowing Northumbria has something for everyone is a reassuring feeling if I ever feel lost at any point throughout the year.

Advice for someone considering Northumbria

Do it! Northumbria is a great community, and although a large University, it has a small intimate community feeling. The location within Newcastle is great and it's a brilliant city where you are guaranteed to find like-minded people.
