Craig McLaughlan

Biography

Born and raised in Newcastle, Craig has been fascinated by the Americas, culturally and socially, since a child. He travelled across the U.S., visiting all 48 continental states, and northern Mexico for 3 months aged 18. Upon returning to the UK he settled in London and studied for his undergraduate degree at Middlesex University, where he took courses on both Latin America and the U.S. as part of his American history degree. It was during this period that Craig became passionate about comparative history, specifically in the context of the American hemisphere, and Brazilian history. After graduating from Middlesex Craig became involved with the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Council of Canning House, and enrolled on the UK’s first MA in comparative American studies at the Institute for the Study of the Americas. The focus of his dissertation was Confederate emigration to Brazil following defeat in the Civil War.
