Office: Apps for Study

What is Office 365?

Microsoft Office 365 offers a collection of apps that you will use during your studies at Northumbria University.

Every student has free access to Office 365 while studying at Northumbria University. This includes apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and more.

When will I use Office 365?

You will use the Office 365 apps throughout your studies, often on a daily basis.

Office apps will be used to work on individual and group projects, to take notes, create presentations and stay updated with important events.

Some of the apps in Office that you will use regularly are:

  • PowerPoint – to view lecture presentations, record video/audio content, and create your own presentations.
  • Word – to write assignments, take notes and share information with tutors and fellow students.
  • Outlook – to stay in touch with tutors, receive important messages about your course and get updates from the University.
  • OneDrive – to securely save all your work and files, which you can access and share for collaborative working via the cloud.

How do I access Office 365?

You can access Office either:

  • Online via www.office.com by signing in with your Northumbria University email address and password.
  • On open access computers on campus.
  • By installing Office on your own personal device.

Northumbria University students can install Office for free on up to five personal devices.

Office 365 two-factor authentication.

Two Factor Authentication is an extra layer of security to make sure a person trying to access an account is who they say they are. We strongly recommend you use!

Once you have set up the Microsoft Authenticator app, you will be automatically prompted to confirm each login attempt using your smartphone or tablet.

The Microsoft Authenticator app works with any smartphone or tablet running on Android and iOS.

When logging in to Office 365 for the first time, you should receive a 'More information required' prompt, asking you to setup Two Factor Authentication which will guide you through the process of setting up your additional security verification. You can then add your Northumbria account to the Microsoft Authenticator app by selecting the option Work or school account.

How will I use Office 365?

The applications within Office can be used for many different purposes, such as:

  • Creating PowerPoint presentations for use in coursework or assessments.
  • Planning and writing assignments using Word.
  • Sharing documents with other students and your tutors using OneDrive.
  • Using Outlook to send and receive emails.
  • Making notes and organising important information using OneNote.
