Top Tips from Northumbria University student, Bethany Stoppard-Wood

Student Life

Coming to Northumbria in September? We can’t wait for you to experience the amazing campus, city and explore further afield. Third year Marketing Management student Bethany Stoppard-Wood moved to Northumbria from Wakefield and shares some top tips from her time at uni so far…

Where is the best hangout spot on campus? Aug 15 16 Hidden Gems Su
Definitely the SU. It’s a great place to watch live music or football matches on the TV and it’s always a great atmosphere to chill with your friends.

What's your favourite North East restaurant and why?
My favourite restaurant in the North East is Scalini’s. I live in Jesmond and it’s very handy. It’s just on Osbourne Road and does great Italian food. They have a great variety from pasta and pizza dishes, to steak and tapas. It’s really good value for money too, which obviously helps being a student!

What's your favourite North East bar and why?
My favourite bars are Spy Bar in Jesmond or Pleased To Meet You further in the town centre. Spy Bar is a five minute walk from where I live and it’s always a great atmosphere. They also sell really good, cheap food. It’s a real student bar and a great place to go with your friends. Pleased To Meet You have the best cocktails! It’s a little bit fancier than Spy Bar which means you can get a bit dressed up. A great place to go before a night out!

Where would you choose to go on your weekend?
At the weekend it’s good to go on nights out in Newcastle town centre. There’s a range of nightclubs from House of Perdu to TupTup Palace, all of which host a variety of themed nights catered to your personal music taste.

If you had friends or family visiting, what would be the must see places you would take them to? Aug 15 16 Hidden Gems Tynemouth
Tynemouth beach is always a good place to take your family and friends. It’s a short car journey or you could take the Metro. It’s also worth visiting the Angel of the North as something to tick off your bucket list! When my friends come and visit, we like to go for food and drinks down by the Quayside. The views are great and it’s a picturesque place to either relax or have a couple of drinks with friends. Another cool place to try is The Great British Cupcakery – they do these amazing cupcake layered milkshakes that are to DIE for.

Which is your favourite music venue, and who did you go to see there?
My favourite music venue is Digital mostly because they always show a variety of DJ’s there. The first artist I saw was Route 94 and it was one of the best nights out that I’ve ever had in Newcastle. World Headquarters is also cool for music. They do a night every so often called ‘Exhale’ and it’s just full of Ibiza classics.

Do you have any other advice for new students starting at Northumbria?Try and experience as much of Newcastle as you can and get to know the city you’re in. Newcastle has so much to offer and it will become your second home, so make the most of the few years you’ll get to spend here.
