Visa and Immigration

Students joining SGU programmes in Newcastle can apply for a Tier 4 student visa. This page provides further information on visa options.

Students will be assigned to a Northumbria University award during their time in Newcastle. All Northumbria awards are below degree level. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) tier four visa policy states that where a student in studying an award below degree level, they can spend a maximum of two years in the UK. SGU students can therefore only complete a maximum of two years in Newcastle before progressing to the SGU True Blue campus in Grenada to complete their studies.

Where students join the Six Year Doctor of Medicine (MD6) programme in Newcastle they will be eligible to apply for a visa covering the MD6 year only. Upon successful completion of their first year of study, students will apply for a second visa to cover their studies on the Five Year Doctor of Medicine programme (MD5). Where students join MD5 direct they can apply for a single two year visa. Students who join the Four Year Doctor of Medicine programme (MD4) will only study in Newcastle for one year before progressing to Grenada. MD4 students can apply for a single one year visa to cover their studies in Newcastle.

Can students from UK Foundation programmes join SGU programmes?

Students who have completed a UK Foundation programme may be eligible to join the Five Year Doctor of Medicine programme (MD5) where their Foundation programme has a sufficient level of science and students are able to demonstrate academic progression (i.e. their Foundation programme is at a lower academic level than the SGU programme they want to study). However, time spent on the Foundation programme will count towards the two year visa time limit. Students who join MD5 from a UK Foundation programme would generally only be able to study for one year in Newcastle before progressing to the SGU True Blue campus in Grenada to complete their studies.
