Architecture and Built Environment

REF 2014

  • The Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF2014) results show strong success for Architecture and Built Environment, with a 42% increase in staff submitted. These results place us in the top 25 for research power in the United Kingdom.

  • This is a result of our excellent publications, of which more than 50% are ranked world-leading or internationally excellent.

This research area covers the disciplines of Architecture, Building Services, Construction, Property and Surveying. Some of our most innovative work is represented by four key groups: Building Information Management, Sustainable Energy Systems, Urban Regeneration & Architectural Design and Virtual Reality & Visualisation. In addition, a rapidly developing group is Construction Technology. Researchers work collaboratively with other disciplines, such as business, cognitive science, economics, engineering, informatics, law, physics and sociology.

Building Information Management

Building Information Management enables construction professionals to design, construct and operate buildings virtually through the development and testing of prototypes. This approach eliminates errors, reduces risk and delivers greater certainty of cost, time and performance...

Construction Technology

The group has particular research interests in the technology of construction and its materials. Currently our specific research interests are in concrete design, the use of advanced materials for the preservation and upgrading of historic structures and the use of computational modelling...

Sustainable Energy Systems

Over half of all energy use is due to buildings and the majority of carbon emissions can be attributed to their use. Our academics research low carbon and renewable energy for heating, air conditioning, power and lighting in buildings...

Urban Regeneration & Architectural Design

This group carries out research into areas including architecture, regeneration and urban design. Researchers focus on architectural design quality, which includes innovation in the design process and the evaluation of design quality, urban design with an emphasis on place-making...
