TE7079 - Technology Enhanced Learning: Practice, Evidence and Debate

What will I learn on this module?

Whether you are a professional working within education or are intending to work in education, this module is intended to provide you with an opportunity to develop your knowledge of technology enhanced learning (TEL) and the extent to which it enhances or inhibits learning and teaching. The module will take you on a journey through the relationship between computer science and TEL. It will enable you to explore and consider the impact of TEL pedagogy and consider it in relation to your own practice/experience. The focus is broad as you will be encouraged to consider all aspects of TEL in variety of teaching and learning contexts, i.e. in the statutory, further/higher and lifelong learning sectors.

How will I learn on this module?

Teaching and learning in this module will include a wide variety of strategies to ensure that you have a wide variety of experience. A combination of lectures and seminars will provide you with the theoretical, anecdotal and case study material from which to build discussion and debate.
Opportunities to share and explore experiences and learning with fellow students will form an important part of the teaching and learning strategies in this module, small group learning, presentations, independent study and guided study. The use of online learning resources and group tutorials, together with a range of practical activities are introduced and used to reinforce the learning.

How will I be supported academically on this module?

In addition to lectures and supporting resources, support will also include feedback from tutors during small-group seminars and tutorials. In addition, tutors will respond to questions via the module’s discussion board at the University’s eLearning Portal so that the whole group can benefit. You will also be supporting individually in one-to-one tutorials.

What will I be expected to read on this module?

All modules at Northumbria include a range of reading materials that students are expected to engage with. Online reading lists (provided after enrolment) give you access to your reading material for your modules. The Library works in partnership with your module tutors to ensure you have access to the material that you need.

1. Critical understanding of the breadth and complexity of the role of technology enhanced learning in educational contexts

Intellectual / Professional skills & abilities:

1. Identify an aspect of or a technology and reflect critically on its use in a teaching/learning context
2. Engage with and critically evaluate current research in relation to TEL
3. Critically analyse the impact of TEL on pedagogical practice
4. Critically Evaluate the effectiveness of TEL .
on the learners’ experience.

Personal Values Attributes (Global / Cultural awareness, Ethics, Curiosity) (PVA):

1. Enhanced your communication skills through discussion during teaching and learning activities and your written work for your summative assessment
2. Develop your team working skills through small group work during delivery of the module.

How will I be assessed?

Formative Assessment
Small group tasks and discussion which will include tutor and peer verbal feedback.

Feedback
You will receive verbal tutor and peer feedback

Summative Assessment
You will discuss and critically evaluate technology enhanced learning opportunities and the extent to which they enhance or inhibit teaching and learning.

Module abstract

In this module you will have the opportunity to explore, in depth, what is meant by ‘technology enhanced learning’ (TEL) and how it impacts on learning and teaching in the 21st century. This includes consideration of the relationship between computer science and TEL; does technology the education process and what does research evidence say in relation to this? You will examine how technologies have impacted on pedagogies and critically evaluate whether TEL enhances or inhibits teaching and learning.
