AP0427 - Learning Strategies for Pre-Professional Programs

What will I learn on this module?

This module is designed to assist you in developing the cognitive and metacognitive skills required to aid you in your development as a self-regulated and directed medical student. Through highly participatory and critically reflective course activities you will develop the ability to examine and interpret your experiences as a student studying the medical sciences and your cognitive skills. You will be exposed to the fundamentals of creating a personalized and effective time management schedule. You will also identify underutilized learning strategies, formulating various learning approaches to enhance your retention of knowledge and long-term memory. Also important is the development of your ability to assess different memorization strategies along with different reading and note-taking strategies, the creation of effective study groups, designing activities for an effective small group session, combining different MCQ test-taking approaches, identifying types of test-taking errors, and appraising personal academic attitudes and mental habits. You will also become more competent in observing how stress, fear and anxiety affects the learning process. You will continuously improve your competence in formulating and revising a study plan to enhance long-term memory/retention throughout the course of this module and you will learn how to synthesize active learning strategies and higher order reasoning skills to develop effective learning tools for problematic module content in the medical sciences.

How will I learn on this module?

You will build on the knowledge and understanding learning and self-regulated learning strategies needed for learning in the medical sciences. Transfer of information in this module will occur through in class assessments, self-reflection, and a variety of assignments designed to help you plan assess and revaluate your personal approach to learning content contained within the DipHE Medical Sciences programme. There are multiple opportunities to gain feedback on your learning preferences and how you use these preferences to manage your tasks, plan for success and improve your learning cycle. You will learn through content delivery modalities that include; lectures, learning in a small group setting, directed learning activities, self-directed study and hands on practical laboratory sessions. St. George’s University actively promotes technology-enhanced learning through the use of course management software (SAKAI), interactive audience response (TurningPoint) and an online testing platform (ExamSoft). All information relevant to the module including; syllabus, objectives, timetable, staff contact details and assessment will be posted on the SAKAI module site. You will be provided with dedicated online learning resources for all components of the module encompassing: lecture notes, key texts, practice questions, directed learning activities, along with both formative and summative assessment. Exam feedback delivered through ExamSoft will provide an overview of your strengths and weaknesses across categories and subject areas for further improvement. Feedback will also be afforded to you through clicker questions within each lecture and weekly formative assessments. Formative feedback is further supplemented across all of the modules on the DipHE Medical Sciences programme after lectures or during office hours aligned to the assessment and feedback pillars in the programme framework for Northumbria awards

How will I be supported academically on this module?

Academic members of staff provide support during office hours and via email to clarify concepts and/or direct you to relevant resources You will also have the opportunity to participate in supplemental small group sessions led by a tutor or demonstrator to help you to comprehend and apply key concepts covered in lecture. Online practice questions are provided to help you evaluate your comprehension of module content and to help you grasp key concepts. All teaching and assessment material, including web-based practice problems and quizzes, case reports and other supportive material, is posted on the electronic course management site (SAKAI) and announcements regarding any changes in scheduled delivery will be posted on the module site and emailed to all students. Detailed objectives, practice problems, web based practice quizzes, and other supportive material are posted to the course management site to help guide you through the module. The discussion forum folder on SAKAI is a powerful tool of the course where you may post your questions regarding administrative as well as academic issues and will be encouraged to take part in the discussion. Forums are monitored by Academic members of staff. Academic, learning and personal support is provided through the SGU offices of the Dean of Basic Science, Department of Educational Services and Dean of Students.

Module abstract

Learning how to learn for the purpose of mastering the medical sciences is perhaps a science itself. Our brains and how we process information, our learning preferences, our ability to be strategic and resilient significantly impact our ability to perform. Using an approach which is fully integrated into your academic program you will develop both your cognitive and metacognitive skills as you consider both informal and formal feedback you receive about your own learning and gain exposure to brain based strategies proven to be effective in learning the medical science disciplines. This module will take you on a journey of discovering how to learn in the medical sciences. It will give you the tools to employ customized and strategic approaches to meeting the professional and academic competencies required of a medical student.
